i applied for a fellowship while in the jungles of costa rica, set up interviews while in romania, and came back to the u.s. to secure a position at the job fair. oh, what an effort, but it has finally paid off! and what a telling tale about the globazation of technology to allow me to take on this challenge while spanning three continents! (if you pretend that costa rica is not part of north america, making it sound more exciting)
so i wrapped up my internship in Romania after i found out i was selected as a finalist for a fellowship. the presidential management fellowship places people in two year positions within federal agencies. i flew to DC for the job fair, competing with 700 other finalists for only 400 positions. i went on over 20 interviews in one week, definitely honing my interview skills in the process as i was measured against a myriad of overqualified people!
while i did not receive my dream job of working with asylum seekers and refugees, i finally landed a job - woo hoo! with the office of economic adjustment, conducting community development work with towns that will be negatively impacted by military base closures or expansions (either through loss of jobs from a closure or not enough infrastructure (healthcare, education, etc) to support an expansion). it should certainly be interesting to apply my international development/capacity building experience in a US community context. i will be moving to DC at the end of August, so starting planning your east coast visits! i think i am most excited about having health insurance, a decent salary to pay off my student loans, and being in one place for a little while!
it of course was also really nice to go back to minnesota, see family and friends, and regroup before i headed back overseas.
